Craniosacral Therapy for Newborns and Babies

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is an extremely gentle, light-touch therapy that is well suited to newborns and older babies, as well as children and adults.

Babies may develop areas of tightness or restriction in their bodies and this can happen for many reasons: for example, their position in the womb during the later stages of pregnancy, a very quick or prolonged birth, or when assistance such as ventouse delivery or a caesarean section is required.

Craniosacral Therapy offers a calm and supportive way for babies to release these patterns of tension. Using very gentle touch, the therapy helps the baby's body to settle and encourages natural relaxation and balance.

Areas of tension are often found around the base of the head, the neck, along the spine, and around the diaphragm (the large muscle beneath the lungs), and when these areas feel tight they can sometimes affect how comfortably a baby feeds.

Many parents seek Craniosacral Therapy if their baby experiences challenges such:

  • Difficult latching or feeding comfortably, can seem fussy

  • Take in excess air whilst feeding, causing them to be unsettled or colicky

  • Signs of digestive discomfort, such as mild possetting to projectile reflux

  • Difficult settling or appearing easily overstimulated

  • Preference for turning their head more easily to one side

  • Flat spots on their head

  • Use of one arm much more than the other

  • Jaundice

  • Umbilical hernia

By helping the nervous system settle, Craniosacral Therapy can support babies in moving into a calm "rest and digest" state, which often helps them feel more comfortable and relaxed.

Parents also often bring babies for support during periods of change, such as growth spurts, teething, or when they simply seem unsettle or out of sorts. The first years of life involves rapid development; the brain is growing quickly, the skull bones are adapting, and the jaw is evolving from sucking to chewing. At times, babies can benefit from gentle support as their bodies adjust to these changes.

What to Expect at an Appointment

The first appointment lasts up to one hour. Follow-up sessions are typically 45 minutes.

Sessions are always guided by your baby's comfort and needs. There is plenty of time for feeding, changing nappies, or simply settling your baby if needed. Treatment can take place while your baby is awake or asleep, and they may remain in your arms throughout the sessions if that feels best.

I work gently and respectfully with your baby's nervous system and will only continue treatment while they appear comfortable and receptive. The aim is always to support your baby in a calm, unhurried way.

"I can’t recommend Fiona highly enough. I took my baby to see her because we were struggling with latch issues, and after just a couple of sessions things improved completely. Fiona also helped resolve my daughter’s jaundice and digestive issues; as well as sharing a solution to her umbilical hernia. She always offers thoughtful support and sound advice."

"Fiona had such a calm and caring approach when working with my daughter. As a mother, I left every appointment feeling, supported, reassured and nurtured by her incredible knowledge and kindness, and the results truly spoke for themselves."
